SLED Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Richland County
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in the City of Columbia in Richland County.
Officers with the Columbia Police Department responded to Southeast Park on Hazelwood Road in Columbia regarding a domestic violence call. Officers encountered a man armed with a gun in the parking lot of Southeast Park. The man was later identified as Adam Tyler Dowdy, 33. Dowdy attempted to flee, and officers followed. Dowdy shot at two officers and officers returned fire. During the exchange of gunfire, Dowdy and two officers were shot. Dowdy and the two officers were transported to the hospital. The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified Columbia Police Department Officer Christopher Delong, 29, and Dowdy, who both died from their injuries at the hospital. The Columbia Police Department identified the injured officer as Master Police Officer David Dymock, 29. Dymock was released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries. SLED was requested to investigate by the Columbia Police Department.
This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.
SLED conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.
The incident in Richland County is the 24th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026.
This is the 1st officer involved shooting for the Columbia Police Department this year.
In 2025, there were 45 officer involved shootings in South Carolina.
The Columbia Police Department had no officer involved shootings last year.
